HRV — the beat-to-beat alterations in heart rate — is an accurate, reliable reflection of the many physiological factors modulating the normal rhythm of the heart. It provides a powerful means of observing the interplay between the sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous systems. Over 30 years, HRV has become one of the most reliable indicators of Nonspecific Adaptation Deficit (NAD) and a forecast indicator of health risks related to chronic diseases, morbidity, mortality, and aging.

The Nonspecific Adaptation Deficit (NAD) concept was created and developed by Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Danev, Doctor of Medical Science, alongside a medical team of associated doctors. Life-threatening diseases are preceded by certain nonspecific changes — a depletion of the capacity for adaptation to unfavorable internal or external conditions. Increased requirements and decreased adaptation capacity create a vicious cycle from which the only exit is lethal disease and death. NAD reflects decreased efficiency of the negative feedback that regulates basic life processes.

Pulse wave is a measurable physiological phenomenon in the arterial system during blood circulation. The condition of small and large arteries is key to prevention and diagnosis of cardiovascular illness — arterial stiffness and augmentation are strong indications of potential heart attack, heart failure, sclerosis, and renal complications. PWV analysis and arterial stiffness indexes (EEI, DDI, DEI) can suggest a healthcare professional begin appropriate treatment long before symptoms or clinical signs appear.

The autonomic nervous system is extensive and involved in the function of every organ system; clinical manifestations of autonomic dysfunction appear in virtually all diseases. ANS/HRV has successfully been used to assess the negative influence of stressors including environmental pollution, dietary problems, psycho-social discomfort, and behavioral disorders. VitalScan monitoring is developed according to standards and mathematical procedures for short-term HRV analysis and for pulse-flow and autonomic challenge tests.

Why Test ANS?

The numbers make the case.

Published studies show autonomic neuropathy is common, dangerous, and dramatically under-tested. VitalScan makes screening simple, fast, and repeatable.

17%

of patients with Type 1 diabetes develop cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy

22%

of patients with Type 2 diabetes develop cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy

25–50%

of patients with symptomatic autonomic dysfunction die within 1–5 years of diagnosis

2%

of people with diabetes are tested for cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN)

ADA Standard of Care — “Screening for autonomic neuropathy should be instituted at diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes and 5 years after the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes.” A patient's history and physical examination are ineffective for early detection of CAN — noninvasive tests that have demonstrated efficacy are required.
